Merrill Beyeler is a prominent figure in the USBW and a proponent of habitat restoration for Salmonids and resident fish. The Beyeler properties are located at the headwaters to the Lemhi, which serve as an important geographical location for the watershed. This section of the Lemhi is important as it provides habitat for spawning Salmonids and refuge for juvenile fish. The goal of this project was to improve channel geometry, increase areas for refuge, provide more suitable spawning habitat, and increase connectivity to the floodplain. This was accomplished by adding channel-spanning structures to slow water down and create pools, stabilize banks and the addition of vegetation for thermal refugia, and brush mattresses and large woody debris to move water out into the floodplain.
